The data from these surveys areof varying quality. The design and specifications (terrainclearance, sampling rates, line spacing, and reductionprocedures) varied from survey to survey depending on the purposeof the project and the technology of that time. Every attempt wasmade to acquire the data in digital form. Most of the availabledigital data were obtained from aeromagnetic surveys flown by theU.S. Geological Survey (USGS), flown on contract with the USGS,or were obtained from other federal and state agencies. Allof the pre-1975 data are available only on hand-contoured mapsand had to be digitized. These maps were digitized alongflight-line/contour-line intersections, which is considered to bethe most accurate method of recovering the original data.Digitized data are available as USGS Open File Report 99-557(URL: ).The surveys were flown mostly in east-west flight lines, spacedfrom 0.125 to 3.0 miles apart, with elevations ranging from 400 ftto 1000 ft above ground in the drape mode and 5000 ft above sealevel in the constant barometric elevation mode. Surveys flown atelevations other than the target elevation were mathematicallycontinued to the target elevation. About half of the state wasflown at a line spacing of 0.5 mile or smaller. All surveys have been continued to 152.4 meters (500 feet) aboveground and then blended or merged together. The entire state gridwas then continued upward to 304.8 meters (1000 feet) above ground.Grids at both elevations are available in several formats. This Virginia aeromagnetic compilation is one part of a nationaldigital compilation by the U.S. Geological Survey, where thestandard selected for this national compilation is a surveyelevation of 304.8 m (1000 feet) above mean terrain. Other statecompilations can be found online at:Supplemental_Information: Also included are grids of the statewide aeromagnetic compilation at anelevation of 152.4 meters (500 feet) above ground. The grid spacing is0.5 km.Also included on this web page is a statewide compilation of gravity data. The gravity data consist of prior publicly available data, and is presentedhere both in point format and as a grid, with a grid spacing of 2.0 km.How should this data set be cited?Snyder, Stephen L. , 2005, Virginia Aeromagnetic and Gravity Maps and Data: A Web Site for Distribution of Data: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2005-1052, U.S. Geological Survey, Reston, Virginia, USA.Online Links:What geographic area does the data set cover?West_Bounding_Coordinate: -83.7East_Bounding_Coordinate: -75.3North_Bounding_Coordinate: 39.4South_Bounding_Coordinate: 36.5What does it look like? The grids are in Geosoft Oasis-Montaj binary gridformat (*.grd) and each has an accompanying file with the suffix .githat contains the projection information. The grid spacing of the aeromagneticgrids is 0.5 km and the grid spacing of the gravity grid is 2.0 km.Three alternate formats, produced from the Geosoft grids, are suppliedfor each of the primary grids. The three alternate formats are:1) Grid Exchange Format - an ASCII grid transfer format (file type .GXF)2) USGS a binary - USGS PC format (binary format - file types *.usg and *.usg.gi)3) ESRI Spatial Analyst (file type *.ARC) - a binary format consisting ofa *.flt and a *.hdr file.Entity_and_Attribute_Detail_Citation: vamag_1000ft.grdGrid of residual total intensity of Earth's magnetic field (Source: well-established geophysical data quantities)grid cellThe total magnetic field minus a geomagnetic reference field, whichis a long-wavelength regional magnetic field. The most commonlyused reference field is determined from a model developed by theInternational Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA). TheInternational Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF) is a predictive modeladopted at the beginning of a model period (e.g. in 1989 for 1990-1995).After the model period, a revised definitive model is adopted, calledthe Definitive Geomagnetic Reference Field (DGRF). This is the preferredmodel to use for removing regional magnetic fields. The individual magnetic surveys were continued from their originalflight elevation surfaces to a draped surface 500 ft above theterrain and merged together. The final merged grid was then continuedto a draped surface 1,000 feet above terrain. The grid spacing of the finalmerged grid is 0.5 km.
